See, I thought it was going to be scary, and then you started talking about learning acting and I was like "Oh, it's not scary."

That's when it happened. You told me I had to read every day. READ.

The horror.

Ha. You so funneh!
Oh hay! I forgot to add a link in the description. I wanna pimp you out!

Oh by the way, thanks for completely making me shit myself and spill my scotch onto the cigarette I spat out lighting my mic on fire with that mention I got in the video. Total surprise. You may want to be careful how much you let your viewers think that you associate with me. Toxic reputation. There IS bad publicity in this world, and so I walk.

Good points in the video. I always tell folks that consonants are my personal key for monitoring crisp speaking and adequate vocal power. Not necessarily over-annunciating, but I know that when a consonant goes flaccid, especially at the end of a word, to toss the recording entirely unless it specifically pertains to that emotion/accent. Or not, if I'm drunk and don't notice it. Like I said, toxic reputation.

Keep up the good work Piper, you're an inspiration.

HAHAHAHA.
Oh that makes it all worth it. Cigarettes and scotch, you're so classy.

Yeah that's right, getting classy intoxicated before I go into work to help manage the stupidest and most hokey haunted trail experience you've ever cringed at. Thanks for the free advertisement though, you can be my pimp any ghoulish night.

You're welcome! I enjoy promoting people who I think are very talented!

(Piper's non-promoted colleagues huddle in a corner and silently weep)

*record scratches, everyone looks at Amaranthus*

So much pressure to be good at pijping now.

Greatly humorous.
I'm not a voice actor (nor will I ever be) but I had to get used to public speaking during my last two years of college to give demonstrations and whatnot (I was a TA for a few classes). Practicing with totally unrelated things does help you feel prepared and learn to improvise. I used to give spontaneous painting demonstrations to my cat.

Speaking of mispronouncing words - my girlfriend and I come from opposite ends of the state (I'm from Long Island, NY and she is from the upstate/central area) so we have a few words that we pronounce completely differently. I think that is bound to be the case when any two people come together. She pronounces "western" as "westrin".

My, my. Westrin? That's kinda cute!

You may think that supercalifragilisticexpialidocious dosen't come up often in everyday life but this is the second time I have heard it today... just saying :P

haha. that's funny. what timing.

You're now known unofficially as Pijper haha.

Oh gawd, yes. Naturally, that is what must happen.

I watched this video with my ears instead. I am such a rebel.

damn. you're so metal.

i watched this video with my feet
#gitonmylvl

:O

stop. I cannot even handle!

#2spooky

also, i don't get your sig :/

Hmm. Do you play any D20 games?

i tried getting into d&d once but no, never with that system

Well it's a joke about how when you go to attack you have to roll to see if you actually hit before roll to see how much damage you've done. So it's a play on words. Like "mmh. yeah baby. I'd hit that."

I say "on" and "own" the same whereas lots of people would pronounce "on" like "ahn".

There are some pronunciations that bother me though. Pronouncing "orange" like "ore-ange" instead of "are-ange" just sounds so grating to me.

Also I guess general sound recording question, but how do you get a clear recording from the microphone instead of also picking up a bunch of static in the recording? Or you just have to have an expensive microphone or special hardware or something?

Oh really? "are-ange" sounds so strange to me. Like a pirate "ARRRR!! ange."

Anyway, you asked something so now I have to answer. Heheh. I am so sorry. I'm passionate about microphone and sound processing. So anyone else interested in this answer, go ahead and read it. <3

Well in the video I'm just recording using my webcam microphone. But I do have a shotgun mic for my voice acting, which has a super cardioid pattern in how it picks up the sound. It's shaped quite like the polar pattern of our magnetosphere actually, which fascinates me.

Now, shotgun mics are not the typical kind people use for voice over, though a lot of voice actors use them. Generally shotgun mics are hooked up as a "boom mic" on a set, for movies and such. This means that if I turn up the gain (how much the microphone can pick up on) I can actually point it out my window and hear my neighbors chatting it up pretty well. The pro of a shotgun mic is that it's very sensitive. The con of a shotgun mic is that it's very sensitive. Haha. So sensitive in fact that you can hear my tongue move when I go to speak. So I have it set up off-axis coming from above. So that it's recording my voice but not directly pointed at my mouth.

I also record in a booth that has acoustic tile to absorb any sound I'm making so that it does not have any kind of reverb being picked up and I make sure all other noises, like fans (computers, AC) radios or anything like that are turned off.

The background static is nearly non existent for my microphone, and this is mostly due to having low self noise, as some microphones actually emit their own electric humming/ringing noise. Rooms actually have noise just by simply having air in it, so you can't get any lower than that without audio processing.

I use a program sometimes to help with background noise, but the goal is to avoid audio processing as much as possible!

Now you know what I do. Sorry I didn't let you off the hook with a simple answer :P

No need to apologize and that response is just perfect. I love technical details and I like it very much when people have interest in things involving technical details of some sort or other. It shows a sense of curiosity and a desire to know how things work, which are quite ideal qualities as far as I consider.

So basically it does require special microphones of some sort or other. I always pick up the static from the computer when I try recording, although sometimes it's worse than others. But nothing that I would say has professional sound quality. If the computer fans are being particularly noisy, yeah it's a lot worse. Do you think a USB microphone would work better than a microphone jack type?

Yes. I would say USB is a step up, as long as it's not some sort of headset. I have an XLR mic that needs to be powered by a preamp, but I used to have a USB mic, the Samson C01U is a good starter microphone.

It was my first.

you look like this one guy i know

Is he a gangster like me?

nah he's not nearly as cool as you sweet cheeks

who covered their ass in candy just to take a picture? how did they clean that off? what the hell man

My guess is they were eaten alive shortly after.

Happy (hopefully not too belated) birthday !! Nice pic the Fabs drew for you ;)

Thank you! It was the 27th. On Thanksgiving this year. And yes! It really is a nice pic! :)

I wonder if candy in the crack is as annoying as sand in the crack but anyway... Nice video and good info. The voice track started messing up though, but that may be my browser.

Thank you, and yeah I think it may have been your browser or something. I hate it when that happens to me.

oh I almost forgot and I know its probably late but... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Thank you! A few days late but it's still worth it. Thank you very much!
